Palin's Church May Have Shaped Controversial Worldview

Sarah Palin's world view might be much more influenced by her church than any of us had previously thought. Three months ago she gave a speech addressing the graduating class of commission students at her one-time church, Wasilla Assembly of God.

This is what she said regarding the Iraq war:

"Pray for our military men and women who are striving to do what is right. Also, for this country, that our leaders, our national leaders, are sending [U.S. soldiers] out on a task that is from God," she exhorted the congregants. "That's what we have to make sure that we're praying for, that there is a plan and that that plan is God's plan."

It's all a bit messianic, but she sees God's influence not only in the Iraq war, she sees it in a $30 billion national gas pipeline project that she wanted built in the state.

"I think God's will has to be done in unifying people and companies to get that gas line built, so pray for that," she said.

So, her pet gas pipeline isn't just her idea, it's been transformed into the will of God.

She even thinks she became governor because her pastor prayed for her.

"He was praying over me," she said in June. "He's praying, 'Lord make a way, Lord make a way...' And I'm thinking, this guy's really bold, he doesn't even know what I'm gonna do, he doesn't know what my plans are, and he's praying not, 'Oh Lord, if it be your will may she become governor,' or whatever. No, he just prayed for it. He said, 'Lord, make a way, and let her do this next step.' And that's exactly what happened. So, again, very very powerful coming from this church."

If there's room for change in American politics, nowhere is it more needed than here; in the election of people who think that their every desire - including pipelines and even their election itself - is actually the work and the will of God.

Eight years of this nonsense is enough, and I don't see how McCain can possibly claim that he is running on a ticket for change when he's chosen as his sidekick another loon who thinks that every bloody thing she does is somehow done as the will of God.

The notion that the world is phoning her all the time wanting to know "what is happening in Alaska?" is simply untrue. It has to be. I've never heard anyone anywhere wonder what is happening in Alaska.

It's also hard listening to this to believe that she's speaking in her official capacity as governor. It's so Vice Presidential isn't it?
