US pressures Russia to halt Iran co-operation

As I argued here, I don't think Bush knows what he's doing at the UN and that he's gone there because the neo-Cons have the feeling that they "have to do something" about Iran's nuclear programme without having any clear idea what that something is, or even what it should be.

Nor do I think they have any plan B for what to do when they finally come crashing into the dead end wall that they are racing towards with such frightening speed.

The only alternative Bush has ever put forward is insane. Are we seriously to believe that he's going to launch nukes into Iran? Even he's not that deranged.

The first evidence that the wheels are coming off Bush's UN wagon came this afternoon when the US made the simply deluded demand that Russia should stop selling arms to Iran and end any aid of it's nuclear programme. I mean, are they serious?

'No country should sell Iran any more weapons,' Interfax news agency quoted US Under-secretary of State Nicholas Burns as saying in Moscow.

'Nor should any country give any more help to Iran's nuclear industry, including the power plant at Bushehr,' he added.

What possible reaction did they think they would receive from Moscow? It was swift coming.

The Russian government immediately rejected the US demands, saying it had been established that the work at Bushehr complied with international law.

'The reactor of the plant under construction in Bushehr cannot be used to produce materials for a military nuclear programme because of its technical characteristics,' Foreign Ministry spokesman Mikhail Kamynin said. 'This is well known to the Americans too.'

This is what I mean about the Bushites having no plan whatsoever. They are making demands that anyone with the slightest interest in politics knows are going to be met with an instant rebuttal.

It's a bit like trying to imagine Russia asking the US to cut off all aid to Israel. I mean why would you even waste your breath formulating the question? It's a question that every single person on the planet knows is only going to receive a reply in the negative.

And yet, they made the demand.

That's our first indication of how deranged this sojourn through the UN is.

They haven't formulated any plan A, never mind a plan B.

The scary part of all this is that they are Hell bent on a path that can only end in their humiliation.

What do Bush, Condi and Bolton do at that point?

I really don't know. It's very hard to work out what they're going to do when they haven't even thought that far ahead themselves.
