Senator Honorable in the Sewer.

The McCain campaign have been putting out robocalls which are so dishonest it simply takes your breath away.

* One that questions Obama's patriotism by saying he put "Hollywood above America" during the financial crisis.

* One that says that Obama and Dems "aren't who you think they are" and claims they merely "say" they want to keep us safe.

* One that attaches him to "domestic terrorist Bill Ayers," whose group "killed Americans."

The latest lie is that Obama wants babies to die:
I'm calling on behalf of John McCain and the RNC because you need to know that Barack Obama and his Democrat allies in the Illinois Senate opposed a bill requiring doctors to care for babies born alive after surviving attempted abortions -- a position at odds even with John Kerry and Hillary Clinton. Barack Obama and his liberal Democrats are too extreme for America. Please vote -- vote for the candidates who share our values. This call was paid for by McCain-Palin 2008 and the Republican National Committee at 202 863 8500.
These calls has prompted Joe Klein to finally call McCain dishonourable. I can't understand why people continue to argue that McCain is a man of honour fighting this kind of campaign against his will.

The truth is that McCain has no policies that he can sell and he has descended into the gutter, knowingly, because it is the only place where he feels he might be able to achieve victory.

He is now indulging in the very tactics which he himself, rightly, condemned when used by Rove against him.

Joe Klein:

Back in 2000, in South Carolina, the robocalls--and calls to local right-wing talk radio shows--were about John McCain's "interracial child" and Cindy McCain's drug addiction. They were a craven, disgusting tactic by the George W. Bush campaign. McCain was, rightly, outraged by them.

Now McCain's campaign is making robocalls distorting Barack Obama's non-existent relationship with Bill Ayers:

The call begins: "Hello. I'm calling for John McCain and the RNC," before telling recipients that they "need to know that Barack Obama has worked closely with domestic terrorist, Bill Ayers, whose organization bombed the U.S. Capitol, the Pentagon, a judge's home, and killed Americans."

Now this isn't quite the spew that McCain suffered in South Carolina, but hey, he's got three more weeks to descend to that. Certainly, such calls are not the sort of activity normally attributed to "a man whose courage has never been questioned," as McCain described himself last week. Real men don't hide behind robocalls. It is nowhere near honorable.

But, my friends, I give you John McCain, 2008 edition--John McCain for the history books.

As Andrew Sullivan, a long time McCain admirer, puts it: McCain is "dishonest, dishonorable and despicable."

McCain is trashing his own reputation by engaging in gutter politics of the very worst kind.

UPDATE:

When these same tactics were used against McCain in 2000 he referred to them as "hate calls". Now he's hiring the exact same firm which told appalling lies about him during 2000 and having them do the same to Obama. It's simply beyond the pale. The man has no honour or sense of decency.
Tucker Bounds, a McCain campaign spokesman, defended the calls, saying, "These calls are based on hard facts."
Poor little Tucker. He's the only guy who is going to come out of this with his reputation lower than even McCain's.
