Joe Lieberman Stabs Obama On Fox News

One of the first things that ever made me aware of Barack Obama was the brilliant way he handled the room when he went down to endorse Joe Lieberman's senate bid.

There's a certain irony to the fact that, after all he did to help Joe, we now get Lieberman stabbing him on Fox News. What would Carville say about such a thing?

He's a class act that Lieberman.

LIEBERMAN: Well, I think that - let me say generally that Sen. Obama doesn't come to this debate with a lot of credibility. Basically on the question of Iraq, John McCain has had the guts to stand out on his own arguing for what he thought was right. And it turned out that he was right about the surge working to improve conditions in Iraq.

If we did what Sen. Obama wanted us to do last year, Al-Qaeda in Iran would be in control of Iraq today. The whole Middle East would be in turmoil and American security and credibility would be jeopardized.
And what does he mean when he refers to "al Qaeda in Iran"? Isn't that the very same mistake that McCain made? And he's got the nerve to talk about Obama's credibility on this subject?

He very clearly says "al Qaeda and Iran". I suspect you must just be having trouble with his accent.

Well, I have to admit that this is always a possibility, however, I notice that many Americans - who are not troubled by his accent - also heard him stating "al Qaeda IN Iran".

Fox News' translation of their interview.

Of course it's Fox so I'm sure they're just covering for him, right?

I did confirm after a search though that there were many who similarly chose to mishear him though, or at least chose to believe that was what he said without listening to it for themselves. The danger of taking a blogger at his/her word without confirming facts for oneself I guess.

Actually, I can easily see a mistaken hearing of this phrase, considering the American tendancy to use "'n'" instead of "and".
It's still a stupid point, as if we hadnt invaded Iraq, Iran and al Queda wouldnt have been active in Iraq, as Saddam would have seen them (in Iraq, at least) as a threat to his power and stomped on them.

And what does Lieberman mean, "The whole Middle East would be in turmoil"? As opposed to its current state?

Screw Lieberman anyway, and look for him to change allegiance in 2009, when the Dems will have control of the Senate without his "independent" ass, and he has far less leverage with them.

Thanks for that Dave. And the phrase, "the whole Middle East would be in turmoil" is classic.

And Jason, I will take it on the chin that I heard what he said wrongly. I along with many others.

Ingrid,

Amen, these pro-war idiots provided al Qaeda with an ideal recruiting tool.

Anyone who refers to Clinton as a "Republican lite" is clearly off her meds.
