House Democrats Walked Arm in Arm Through Protests Despite a Weekend of Intimidation.

Anyone who has read Nixonland will know how Nixon managed to portray the violence of the people protesting against the Vietnam War as a revolution that needed to be stopped. He managed to frame the debate as between "the silent majority" and a bunch of crazy hippies who wanted to change things far too fast. And he was highly successful in getting a large amount of Americans to accept his view of things.

Why then is the current right wing violence being viewed as an expression of patriotism? There was, after all, a very recent election, and the winning candidate campaigned saying that this healthcare bill was what he intended to do should he win that election.

It really is time for the Democrats to start denouncing the Republicans and these astroturf groups they're aligned with for helping to incite these people. Especially their own members of Congress like Michele Bachmann, Mike Pence, Marsha Blackburn and Jim DeMint who have been attending these rallies. Bart Stupak of all people actually said something about it tonight on both Hardball and Anderson Cooper's show but all in all the response has been pretty tepid.

I understand people being upset about this health care bill if they don't like that it was passed. Believe me, none of us are going to be happy about it passing if it doesn't get improved and are not satisfied with the bill in its present form. What's been going on with people being threatened and intimidated is just completely unacceptable though.

But, just as violence was decried when it occurred during the protests regarding the Vietnam war, so it should be condemned here.

And it is highly complimentary and hideously inappropriate to describe these people as "patriots". They are - in fact - sore losers, unable to accept that there was an election which their candidate lost.

But 400 BILLION on unconstitutional health care is ok?

Prescription Drug Benefit.
The final version (conference report) of H.R. 1 would create a prescription drug benefit for Medicare recipients. Beginning in 2006, prescription coverage would be available to seniors through private insurers for a monthly premium estimated at $35. There would be a $250 annual deductible, then 75 percent of drug costs up to $2,250 would be reimbursed. Drug costs greater than $2,250 would not be covered until out-ofpocket expenses exceeded $3,600, after which 95 percent of drug costs would be reimbursed. Low-income recipients would receive more subsidies than other seniors by paying lower premiums, having smaller deductibles, and making lower co-payments for each prescription. The total cost of the new prescription drug benefit would be limited to the $400 billion that Congress had budgeted earlier this year for the first 10 years of this new entitlement program. The House adopted the conference report on H.R. 1 on November 22, 2003 by a vote of 220 to 215 (Roll Call 669).
