Why are the Democrats balking at the public option?

If, with 60 votes to hand, the Democrats won't take on the private insurance companies, then it would be understandable if people were to give up on them forever.

They are referred to here as, "a spineless bunch of cowards". I have to say that, should they balk here, it's a description I would agree with.

Despite appearences, the Democrats arent much better than the Republicans, especially when it comes to going up against Big Business.
I wish the Founding Fathers had re-thought the winner-take-all system that they set up, because had they instituted a parliamentary system instead of the two-party one we've ended up with, both the Democrats and the Republicans would've been long gone by now (or more responsive to voters).
Or maybe they knew exactly what they were doing, and were not as benign as they are made out to be - they were the nation's oligarchs, after all.

And the answer is, because they're owned by the corporations, too, of course.
