I really don't understand the confusion about the guilty please or their timing.
These people want to be martyred! The do not want to be seen as being treated with dignity and respect for their rights in a fair trial. That not only undermines their image of themselves, it detracts from the image they have (and want to reinforce) of the US as a brutal and bloodthirsty regime that does what it does because it hates Islam.
Put another way, they doubtless feel (not without some cause) that any trial would be purely a show trial and their attitude is "you're going to kill me anyway, so I'll be damned if I help you try for some kind of propaganda victory as part of that."
That was, of course, supposed to be "guilty pleas."
Larry, you might very well have hit the nail on the head.
Maybe that's what they want.
