Israel and Hamas agree ceasefire.

The Israelis, negotiating through Egyptian intermediates, have agreed a ceasefire with Hamas which is due to come into effect from dawn tomorrow morning.

The ceasefire, which Egyptian intelligence officers have spent weeks trying to arrange, would bring respite after months of conflict in which hundreds have died. It is expected to start with a 72-hour cessation of hostilities on both sides. Hamas has agreed to halt all attacks out of Gaza by its militants as well as other armed groups if, in return, Israel halts its military strikes and begins to lift the economic blockade on the territory.

Egypt's state-owned news agency quoted an unnamed Egyptian official as saying a "mutual and simultaneous calm", would start in Gaza from 6am on Thursday. "Egypt hopes that the two sides will exert all efforts to bring the calm to a success," the official said.

I personally think that this is a very good thing, but I am waiting for John McCain's swift and harsh condemnation of Israel for negotiating with terrorists.

After all, it was only very recently that George Bush stood in the Knesset and compared Barack Obama to Nazi appeasers for daring to suggest that he might negotiate with Iran and Syria, a stance which McCain approved of.

So to find Israel engaging in backroom deals with terrorist groups will no doubt horrify a "straight talker" like McCain.

I can't wait to hear what he has to say.

Tick, tock..... tick, tock......

It looks as if negotiations with terrorists are only troublesome for McCain if Democrats do it.

Exactly my point, Todd. Israel will be praised for extending the "hand of peace".

Had Obama negotiated with Hamas that would have made him a Chamberlain like appeaser.
