John Ashcroft Calls Obama... WHAT????
I think this is a genuine slip of the tongue. Ashcroft looks mortified the minute he realises what he has said.
"The modern conservative is engaged in one of man's oldest exercises in moral philosophy; that is, the search for a superior moral justification for selfishness." - John Kenneth Galbraith.

That is why the greatest danger of all is to allow new walls to divide us from one another.
The walls between old allies on either side of the Atlantic cannot stand. The walls between the countries with the most and those with the least cannot stand. The walls between races and tribes; natives and immigrants; Christian and Muslim and Jew cannot stand. These now are the walls we must tear down.

ROFL. That's some funny shit. I noticed you haven't posted any of Obama's numerous gaffes, such as when he stated this week that if his daughters made a mistake he wouldn't want them punished with a baby. Disgusting comments such as that one are certainly worth more play than this.
Why is that a gaffe?
Obama is saying that whilst it is perfectly acceptable to teach children about abstinence, if one doesn't also teach children about contraception then you are simply asking for unwanted preganancies to happen. If you only teach abstinence, rather than properly educating your children about sex, then you will eventually punish the child for having sex by forcing them to decide whether to abort or keep the baby. That is a terrible thing to do to a teenager, especially if it's brought about because one only teaches children things that accord to ones own religious beliefs.
I can only find clips of the speech online rather than the whole thing, but I note that prior to this comment Obama mentions Aids. One of the most striking things about Bush's $15 billion action against Aids in Africa is that one third of that money is spent teaching abstinence.
People like myself find this outrageous as the money would be much better spent teaching people to wear condoms.
All Obama seems to be saying is that by teaching abstinence rather than sex education, one is inviting the nightmare of unwanted pregnancy amongst teenagers. And one is contributing to an atonishing Aids epidemic in Africa.
Why is that a gaffe?
Referring to the existence of another human life as "punishment" is not something that many of us find acceptable.

Interesting, now aids in Africa is the fault of the US and Bush. In that case I think we'd be best not providing any funds to Africa to combat the disease. I'm sure they can handle it themselves. Maybe the EU could match our withdrawn funds dollar-for-dollar. I can think of other places I'd rather have my tax dollars spent anyhow.

Only if you take the comments completely out of context and ignore the fact that this was said whilst discussing abstinence and a deliberate decision not to teach kids the facts of life.

I never said that and you are deliberately skewering what I said.
I actually think Bush has done very well regarding Aids and Africa in general. However, I feel it is foolish to spend one third of the money he is spending on abstinence classes rather than promoting contraception. It's typical Bush, he does something wonderful then imposes his religious beliefs on other people, undermining some of the good that he has done.
