Ferraro Defends Herself to Diane Sawyer
Here, Ferraro sets out to defend herself and states that she is not a racist, and I must say that I actually believe that she is not a racist. This is a woman who, as she says, has fought for the rights of blacks, the disabled and the gay community.
Her greatest problem was, according to what she says here, that she couldn't find any way to explain Obama's success other than through his colour. She states that she couldn't say it was because of his experience (Hillary's campaign have long grabbed that attribute as belonging to Hillary alone) and, of course, his rhetoric and ability to inspire have already been defined as "just words" by the Hillary campaign, so colour was the only reason she was left with.
The truth is that this is a historic campaign because the US has, for the first time it's history, the chance to elect a female or black president. However, it would be ludicrous to suggest that Hillary Clinton's only attribute is that she is female. Hillary is as bright as a button and when she stated that the other war that needed to be ended was the war against science she had me clapping in my seat. She understands the issues and is willing to fight to further a progressive agenda. It would be insulting and sexist to think that all that was irrelevant and to dismiss Hillary's appeal as one that rests solely on her gender. Why can't Ferraro and others see that it is insulting to see Obama's success as based solely on his race?
