Kicking the Dead to Make Cheap Points
Okay, I've managed always to avoid the ridiculous investigation into whether or not Diana was killed as a result of a conspiracy and have no intention of discussing that subject here. What I found on the National Review Online though was an article of such stunning ignorance and thoughtlessness that it cannot go without comment.
In an article tactfully entitled, "Did Di Die for Prada Islam?" - I hope your mouth, like mine when I read it, is at this point on the floor - Mark Steyn dismisses all reasons for conspiracy, but not for any of the reasons that you or I might think to do so.
Oh no, he thinks the idea is ridiculous on it's face because... well, there's no way I can ever be as crass as he is so I'll let him speak for himself.Look, I like a conspiracy theory as much as the next guy, and I’m entirely prepared to consider the possibility that Di got whacked. But not because she was dating a Muslim. On hearing the news that the Princess’s new beau was a Mohammedan, the British establishment would have been more likely to pop the champagne than order up a hit team. One can easily picture the calculations: Excellent! Sums up the new Britain. A Muslim in the Royal Blended Family, just the kind of dynamic multicultural rebranding we need. Di will be a role model for Muslim women in northern England.
It really is hard to know where to begin when someone takes a death that, literally, paralysed Britain for the best part of a week and turns it into a cheap jibe at multiculturalism. But, leaving that aside is the astonishing ignorance being displayed about the British royal family.
They rarely marry outside their own social circle far less rush to embrace another religion into their warm bosoms. Steyn appears to be aware that the Queen is the official Head of the Church of England, but does he even realise that the British royal family are so class obsessed that Diana, the daughter of the 8th Earl Spencer and undoubtedly a member of the aristocracy, was considered a commoner? And, as he throws around accusations that the British establishment would race to embrace a Muslim is he, again, even aware that Charles was not permitted to marry even a Catholic?
As I say, I have no intention of getting into conspiracy theories surrounding this woman's life and death but I think even the worst right winger could be expected to shy away from saying things like, "After years of shagging cavalry officers and other assorted chinless wonders from the English upper class, Diana had finally made a smart move."
Especially when they are saying so from a point of ignorance of the British Royal family and their habits which is quite breathtaking.
But to take swipes at a dead person simply to make some cheap jibe at British multiculturalism really is a new low.
Okay Mark, we get it. You think Muslims are really bad and Islam is the root of all evil and those stupid Brits deserve everything that happens to them because of the way they have allowed Londonistan to develop.
And it's true that London is beautifully and gloriously multicultural. That's just the way we Londoners like it. You should come here sometime. You'd hate it.
But it might open your eyes to the fact that our love of multiculturalism is most certainly not shared by our Royal family. Now grow up and stop kicking a dead princess to make cheap political points.
PS. And I assure all readers I am FAR from a royalist.
