U.S. Says Iranian Arms Seized in Afghanistan
This stuff is becoming relentless.
Now, the problem I have with this is that the Iranians aided the US in the bringing down of the Taliban, so why would they now have switched sides so dramatically?A shipment of Iranian-made weapons bound for the Taliban was recently captured by allied forces in Afghanistan, the Pentagon’s top officer said Tuesday.
It was the first time that a senior American official had asserted that Iranian-made weapons were being supplied to the Taliban. But Gen. Peter Pace, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said it was not clear if the Iranian government had authorized the shipment.
“We have intercepted weapons in Afghanistan headed for the Taliban that were made in Iran,” General Pace told reporters. “It’s not as clear in Afghanistan which Iranian entity is responsible.”
The shipment involved mortars and plastic explosives and was seized within the past month near the southern Afghan city of Kandahar. Markings on the plastic explosive material indicated that it was produced in Iran, General Pace said.
Indeed, at a time when the US were sending $43 million to the Taliban rulers of Afghanistan, the Iranians were funding the Northern Alliance, so they have a rather better record of opposing the Taliban than the Bush administration do.
Whatever would have given them that idea? Oh, that's right. Bush took help from them to overthrow the Taliban and then turned on them and named them part of an "Axis of Evil".“The overall Iranian role has been to work closely with us to bring Karzai into power,” said Barnett Rubin, an expert on Afghanistan at New York University. “However, the Iranians believe the No. 1 threat is an American attack to overthrow their government. They may do anything it takes to make the United States and its allies uncomfortable there.”
So now, not only are the US once again peddling rumours that Iranians are supplying their enemies - which, once again, they can't prove that any governmental Iranian agency is involved in - they are even admitting that it is Bush's naming of them as part of this evil axis that might be encouraging them to do so.
Now we all know that the Iranians have denied all these charges and have claimed that the US is making these claims concerning both Iraq and Afghanistan to cover up their own incompetence, as we witnessed during the only meeting they have had recently when what amounted to a bun fight took place.
But General Pace has constructed a great way around the tricky issue of whether or not the Iranian government are behind this.
“We then surmise from that one or two things,” he said. “Either the leadership of the country knows what their armed forces are doing, or that they don’t know. And in either case that’s a problem.”You see, guilty if they do, guilty if they don't.
Maybe when Bush had them assisting as allies in Afghanistan it might have been a good time to help the reformist Khatami by ending US sanctions against Iran instead of betraying him by labelling his country as part of an "Axis of Evil".
Were Bush serious about aiding the Iranian people that would surely have been the precisie time to help them.
Instead, we now have Bush and Pace flailing around trying to find any excuse to attack them and accusing them of various crimes for which they supply no proof. It's Iraq all over again. It's not only boring but it will convince only the very few people in the US who share Bush's mindset.

You are aware that the IRGC is part of the government, right?
I think what you mean to say is that nothing can be proven to you. The US could capture Mahmoud Ahmadinejad sneaking across the border in an SUV filled with IEDs stamped "Made in Iran" on them along with a video of them being personally delivered to him by Ayatollah Khamenei and a receipt from a Tehran Radio Shack for all the components and you would spin some conspiracy story about us making the whole thing up so we can have a pretext to go after Iran. Admit it, there is absolutely no proof that you could be given that would challenge your preconceived notions.
I actually answered you within the post:

You are one of that miniscule, rabid minority.
Well, snice there is nothing to back up your claim, and just about every American I've spoken to on the subject (I think I have access to a few more than you do) believes it is far more likely than not that Iran is giving arms to the US opposition, than anecdotally at least I'd have to say you're quite wrong again. It's commons sense really. If I were the Iranians I would certainly try to have arms flowing in to the US opposition.
But as you did not refute it, I'll just assume that my claim holds that there is absolutely no proof that could challenge your pre-conceived beliefs.
Firstly, anecdotal evidence is not evidence at all as I suppose your friends are like mine and tend to be your friends because you share a similar outlook on life. Fortunately we don't have to rely on your friends or mine.
Most Americans favour the US using diplomacy to sort out relations with Iran, which I feel they wouldn't if they believed that US troops were being killed by Iranian weapons. As Pace is leaking this stuff, I presume, to produce the opposite reaction, then a plurality of Americans would appear to think as I suggested.

So would I, but that don't make it so.

No, Jason, proof would change my mind. Proof. You appear willing to believe half baked theories from the people who were wrong in everything they said to get us to support the Iraq war because you think, "It's common sense really."
They have lost the right to ask us to trust them. They need to show PROOF.

I don't see how you can possibly draw a correlation between most Americans hoping that we can deal with Iran diplomatically and people believing or disbelieving that the Iranians are supplying our enemies. They are completely different things. I hope we can deal with Iran diplomatically, but I also have little doubt that they are arming our enemies with weapons that have killed US forces. Your conclusion that I quoted above is completely unsupported by the unrelated poll.
No, Jason, proof would change my mind.
The US military (not the Whitehouse) did attempt to provide proof. They presented captured weapons and had their weapons experts explain how they were traced to Iran. Since obviously that proof didn't satisfy you, I am forced to conclude that in all likelihood nothing will.

Jason, the US "proof" of Iranian involvement was greeted with widespread scepticism. The fact that you feel my reluctance to accept this "proof" means that "nothing will ever convince" me, says much more about your mindset than it does about mine.
I did not draw my conclusion that no evidence will convince you because of your reluctance to accept the proof offered, I drew my conclusion based on your total body of work.
Just as most of the world's scepticism is based on Bush's body of work. What did he once say? You can fool the people once...
