The Bushies are way out of whack with how the public really feel

Is there anything that the public actually agree with the Bush administration on anymore?

Is it possible for an administration to continue to function whilst they seem to be behind the public on every single issue on which they choose to make a stance?

53% of the public want Gonzales to resign.

74% want White House staff to testify under oath.

36% think Bush's Iraq plan is making things worse in Iraq, only 22% think it's making things better and 37% think his plan is having no effect at all.

On the subject of whether or not he should sign a new Iraq bill which includes a time table for withdrawal, 48% think he should sign it and 43% would support a veto.

When asked whether the Democrats should give Bush a clean bill if he vetoes any bill that includes a time table, 43% support the Dems giving Bush a bill without conditions and 45% favour the Democrats withholding funding until Bush agrees to sign a bill that includes a timetable.

You can read the rest for yourself, but it is simply astonishing that an administration that constantly claims to understand how many Americans feel about certain issues, and vaguely threaten that the Democrats will in some way be punished by the public if they fail to give Bush exactly what he wants, turn out to be the ones who are actually least representative of the way that the public truly feels.

Not that I expect any of this to change the way the Bush administration govern, but it should give the Democrats hope in the fact that the public are largely behind the stance they are taking in trying to bring this disastrous conflict to some sort of conclusion.

You're right. They're way too soft on immigration. Oh, you meant the war? Yeah, I always thought opinion polls were a good way to fight wars.

Aren't leaders supposed to engage people in their causes through the strength of their argument? Isn't that what leadership is?

Bush has substituted stubborness for leadership and no-one is following. Oh, and he's losing the war to boot.

And you'll take particular satisfaction if that were to occur, wouldn't you? What is particularly sick is people like yourselves cheering on the Islamists and murderers. I guess as long as the US is having a hard time that's all that counts, right? Disgusting.

Jason,

The war was lost a long time ago. Indeed, it was lost within the first couple of years. The peace was never won. It was lost when Rumsfeld allowed looting and carnage and failed to restore basic order to the streets and then sat around whilst Iraq descended into civil war.

And you're wrong if you think that I take pleasure from any of this. I can no longer even get angry about the Iraq war. As far as I am concerned it's done, you lost, and many more people will die because Bush and people like yourself don't have the honesty to admit that you blew it.

So you constantly see victory just over the next hill and send your young men and women to die so that you can keep your fantasy going. Now that's disgusting.
