Lieberman loses.
And at last the US left appears to have found it's voice as Joe Lieberman lost his fight to Ned Lamont. The result demonstrates that the Democratic voters, if not yet the party, have declared the Iraq war a total disaster and punished Lieberman for his unwavering support of it.
And now Lieberman has revealed how much he appreciates democracy and the Democratic Party itself by announcing that he intends to stand as an independent.
Lieberman, who has held his Senate position for eighteen years, has lost on one issue and one issue alone and that is the Iraq war."Of course I am disappointed by the results, but I am not discouraged," he told supporters. "For the sake of our state, our country and my party, I cannot and will not let that result stand."
"As I see it, in this campaign, we've just finished the first half and the Lamont team is ahead. But in the second half, our team, Team Connecticut, is going to surge forward to victory in November."
This result seems to fly in the face of the logic currently being employed by the Democratic party, where conventional wisdom has always maintained that a Democrat can only win the presidency by demonstrating their pro-war credentials to America's political centre. This is certainly the strategy of people like Hillary Clinton who came out publicly to support Lieberman's nomination.
Michael Moore has warned that the result will "send a cold shiver down the spine of every Democrat who supported the invasion of Iraq".
Will the Democratic party now have the balls to stand up and denounce Bush's ill thought out and disastrous war?
If they don't, then they are deserving of nothing other than contempt. The people are way ahead of them on this as every opinion poll indicates. I thought the idea of politicians was that they should lead?
