Gates cuts back on Microsoft role to concentrate on charity projects

I've been meaning to say for days now how much I admire the decision by Bill Gates to step down from Microsoft and spend the rest of his life giving away 95% of his fortune.

If he goes through with this, and there's no reason to suppose that he won't, he will become one of the few people remembered for how he spent his money rather than how he earned it.

His foundation has assets of $29.5bn. Some of the money funds scholarships and computers for disadvantaged students in America but the lion's share goes to healthcare in developing countries.

The charity provides 90% of the global funding for the eradication of polio. It has made big contributions to international efforts to develop and administer vaccines for diphtheria, whooping cough, tuberculosis.

Couple this with his work with Bono in attempting to reduce third world debt and we have that rarest of creatures. A billionaire with a conscience and a will to use the money to help others.

That's admirable.

I completely agree with you about the work Gates is doing through his Foundation. He'll definitely be remembered along with other great philanthropists like Carnegie or Rockefeller. Good for him!

Hot damn! What a man. But, you know me, quite pessimistic, I still don't trust the guy. He's rich and powerful - he must have done something terribly evil. Heh heh...it's dogma to say what I just said. I might have to rethink it.

I knew when I was about to post this that it would split people.

I simply think we have to give credit where it is due.

Many people would make their friends and families rich and not have the vision and foresight that he has chosen.

He intends to eradicate certain diseases in Africa, which is a great thing to do with his money.

It's a damn site more than most would do.
