UN to slate Iran nuke programme 'soon'

There's a breaking story that the UN are to issue a Chapter Seven resolution against Iran no later than this Thursday demanding that Iran cease all uranium enrichment.

The daily said that the draft resolution expresses "serious concerns" that Iran has not complied with its international commitments and calls on its government to stop producing enriched uranium and return to the negotiating table.

Citing unnamed officials, the newspaper said that the resolution did not contain a fixed deadline for compliance or threats of sanctions if Iran failed to comply.

But Burns told journalists in Paris on Tuesday that if Iran failed to comply with the resolution, a second resolution would be introduced imposing sanctions on Tehran.

These sanctions are likely to include travel restrictions on members of the Iranian government as well as restrictions on the sale of so-called dual-use nuclear technology "that could be used by Iran to develop its (nuclear weapons) capability," he said.

However, the International Herald Tribune reported that Russia and China, two permanent members of the Security Council, were resisting the move to pressure Iran and could hamper efforts to rein in the government in Tehran.
The last paragraph gives the hint that this is a non news story. I simply don't buy that China and Russia will agree to this latest US/UK request.

Am I the only person to be completely befuddled as to what George Bush is actually doing at the UN?

There's no way, whilst Iran are complying with the IAEA, that the Russians and Chinese are going to agree to any of this nonsense.

Georgie should simply give it up. It's going to become embarrassing soon.
