Laura Bush doesn't believe bad polls on husband
President Bush has always maintained that, unlike his predecessor Bill Clinton, he was not going to be a President who slavishly followed the polls.
This was a position that many on the right perceived as one of strength.
However, his wife Laura has taken that stance to new levels of absurdity. She has publicly admitted that, with her husband tanking in the polls at around a 29% approval rating, she simply doesn't believe what the polls are saying.
"I don't really believe those polls. I travel around the country. I see people, I see their responses to my husband. I see their response to me," she said.
"As I travel around the United States, I see a lot of appreciation for him. A lot of people come up to me and say, 'Stay the course'."
Perhaps if the President and his wife stopped appearing solely at army bases or in front of hand picked Republican audiences then Laura would have a better chance of gauging just how popular or unpopular her husband is amongst the electorate.
Not that I believe someone as robust as Laura would ever allow something as trifling as reality to puncture her belief that her husband is a much loved public figure.
Mrs. Bush complained that when her husband's popularity was high, newspapers did not put that on the front page. Now it was low, they took great delight in highlighting the fact.
This is simply further proof of the alternative reality that the Bushites seem determined to live in. Post 9-11 Bush's popularity soared to 86%, a rise of 50% from his pre 9-11 figures, and a fact that was widely reported worldwide.
Asked if she thought the media had been unfair, Mrs. Bush said: "No, I don't think it's necessarily unfair. I think it's just, you know, I think they may be enjoying this a little bit."
Laura, Laura, Laura; there are many things to be said about our feelings regarding your husband's custody of that great office, but let me assure you of one thing. None of us are enjoying it, not even for "a little bit."
