Desperate Republicans chase the black vote
In a sign of how increasingly desperate the Republicans are becoming about November's mid term elections it has been revealed that they are now targeting the traditionally Democratic voting black population.'We have a lot of ground to make up, but we have a message that is resonating,' said Tara Wall, director of outreach communications for the national committee. 'We are now talking to people we have not been talking to before.'
The very fact that Republicans have never attempted to talk this section of the electorate before seems not to be a source of embarrassment to them. It should be.
The bare figures illustrate how tough the fight is going to be. In the last presidential election only 8 per cent of black people voted for George Bush. But, despite the odds, Republicans insist that they see grounds for optimism and, if they succeed, they say they will have prised apart one of the key foundations of Democratic electoral support.
They hope that socially conservative ideas pushed by Bush on issues such as limiting abortion and opposing same-sex marriages will appeal to many traditional black voters. They are also hoping to capitalise on the aspirations of a growing black middle class with its concepts of an 'ownership society' breaking free from government help and handouts.
The Republicans are merely ensuring their own downfall by displaying their desperation.
They'd be as well playing for the gay vote. They are trying to appeal to a group of people who's needs they do not understand, for the simple reason that they have never cared enough about these people to ask what their needs might be.
When one also considers the lengths the Republicans went to in order to disenfranchise black voters during the last two elections, one begins to catch a glimpse of the startling levels of hypocrisy that this party will engage in to retain power at any cost.
It's simply a non-starter. They're wasting their time. You can't go to such lengths to cut people out of the political process and then hope that, four years later, that same group of people will forget what you have done to them and be willing to forgive you.
