US refuses to discuss Iran's nuclear plans in face-to-face talks on Iraq

The US government have agreed to talks with Iran concerning Iraq, but have refused to enter into any negotiations concerning Iran's nuclear developments, preferring to deal with those matters through sanctions or military strikes.

This is despite the fact that Russia and China are unwilling to agree to sanctions, and that their own advisors say that any military strike is unlikely to disable Iran's nuclear facilities and may, indeed, lead to unforetold chaos in the region.

David Albright, a former United Nations weapons inspector has noted, "Taking out the nuclear weapons programme in Iran seems to be nearly impossible. They have so many underground sites now, you don't know what to hit ... The times for military strikes that could have taken out the weapons programme are gone."
Despite this, and despite the fact that leading Republican and Democratic Senators are calling for the administration to engage in talks with the Iranians, the Bush regime is refusing to do so.

This is further proof (were any needed) that, lacking a coherent policy to deal with the Iranian issue, the Bush regime hurtle us ever nearer to a totally preventable war.

A war that will enflame the Middle East and, possibly, drive the US out of Iraq.

The lunatics really have taken over the asylum.
