Rumsfeld and Rice fall out over war tactics
It would appear that Donald Rumsfeld has taken umbrage over Condaleeza Rice's frank admission that the US has made thousands of "tactical errors" in Iraq.
Her observation which, to most sensible people, is simply a statement of fact has enraged Rummy. It's not hard to see why, as he is the man who has made all the "tactical errors".Mr Rumsfeld was withering in his response, suggesting she did not understand warfare. "I don't know what she was talking about, to be perfectly honest," he told a radio station in Fargo, North Dakota, earlier this week. "The reality in war is this ... The enemy watches what you do and then adjusts to that, so you have to constantly adjust and change your tactics ... If someone says well, that's a tactical mistake, then I guess it's a lack of understanding ... of what warfare is about."
Hmm. I think what she meant was sending too few troops to do the job, disbanding the Iraqi military, allowing widescale looting, and failing to establish order in the region that you are occupying.
The "lack of understanding" appears, to me, to be Rumsfeld's. I've said it before and I'll say it again: Why is that man still in his job? If Bush had an ounce of leadership, if he could understand that competence should come before loyalty, he'd have fired this man months ago.
Iraq descends ever more quickly towards civil war, and the architect of this disaster remains at the helm.
