Olmert accuses Syria and Iran of involvement in Tel Aviv suicide bombing

If you want to know who the Americans are next going to name as members of any future axis of evil, it's always wise to tune in to what the Israelis are currently saying, as the neo-Cons appear to be little more than an American branch of the Likud party, always sharing the same world view and the same enemies.

Nor are the Israelis particularly subtle in their attempts to influence American policy. Well, who can blame them? Even they must sense that the current regime is on it's last legs so I suppose the logic isn't so much to strike whilst the iron is hot, as it is to strike while the iron even exists.

Even so, their attempt to put the blame for the latest suicide bombing on to Iran and Syria, seems particularly contrived.

"The order for the Tel Aviv suicide bombing came from Damascus and when the operation was complete the report went back to Damascus," Olmert told a visiting group of U.S. senators, according to his office.

Olmert also said Iran, which provides funding to Islamic Jihad, and the new Hamas-led government bear responsibility for the attack.

"There is a channel of communication between Iran, Syria and the Palestinian Authority," he said.
This is a new tack the Israelis are striking. Immediately after the suicide bombing they attempted to lay the blame at the door of the leaders of the Palestinian Authority - Hamas - who are currently operating a sixteen month ceasefire with Israel. Of course everyone knows that the suicide bombing was carried out by Islamic Jihad, who are not related to the present Palestinian Authority. Even so, to widen their false charges from Hamas and to take it as far as to name two other country's - neither of which is viewed with favour by the current regime in Washington - really is stretching credibility to breaking point.

I know that the relationships between countries have changed since the collapse of the Soviet Union left the US as the world's sole superpower, but - with the war in Iraq - and now with these crude attempts to paint Israel's enemies as the enemies of all right thinking people, the change surely hasn't gone as far as to demand that the superpower fight battles on behalf of the client state?

For that does appear to be Israel's intention. To flag up her enemies as possible targets for future American intervention.

It would be a foolish American who paid any heed to the crude, dishonest, nonsense being spoken from Tel Aviv; sadly there are many fools in the current US administration.
