Iraq's PM agrees steps down to break political stalemate
It would appear the Bush administration are finally to get their way as Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari has agreed to step down as Iraq's PM and allow an alternative to his leadership.
As I reported here the Americans and British had been pushing heavily for this, despite the fact that Mr al-Jaafari had been democratically elected.
It is unclear whether any new appointment will be able to unite the country any more than Mr al-Jaafari could or whether he will simply be a stop gap leader watching as his country descends into civil war.
His decision to step down is a bolt from the blue.He insisted on Wednesday stepping aside was "out of the question" but, in a letter to the Shia executive committee of the United Iraqi Alliance yesterday, he wrote: "I tell you, you chose me, and I return this choice to you to do as you see fit. I cannot allow myself to be an obstacle, or appear to be an obstacle."
With al-Jaafari out of the way, the Bush regime are fast running out of excuses for why their experiment in Iraq has not resulted in the peaceful democracy that they forecasted when they invaded.
They have so far blamed Saddam "remnants", "diehards" or "deadenders" for the chaos currently running thoughout the entire country. They promised that things would settle once elections were carried out; indeed, a full year ago Dick Cheney said that the insurgency was in "it's last throes".
Their every promise has proven to be more empty than the last.
Finally, they settled on al-Jaafari has the reason for all their ills and set out to remove him.
They have got their way. It reminds me of the old saying, "be careful what you wish for, you might just get it".
Bush has now had his wish granted. Over to you, Mr Bush. Sort it. End the chaos.
Expect a new reason for Iraqi disorder any day now - and the words that offer it will be as empty as all that have gone before.
