Clinton war chest adds weight to rumours of 2008 White House bid

The size of Hilary Clinton's re-election war chest is the best hint yet that, rather than aiming to regain her seat in the Senate, she actually has her gaze fixed firmly on the White House.

Mrs Clinton has a war chest of $19.7 million, which seems rather a lot to take on the two relatively unknown opponents that she faces in her Senate battle, which can only lead to one other conclusion. The Clintons are planning on re-entering the White House.

"Right now Senator Clinton is running two parallel campaigns. One of the campaigns ends this November, and the other, she hopes, will end in 2008. She really does not need the amount of money that she has to get re-elected, but she will need that amount of money and a lot more for a presidential run," said Nathan Gonzalez, political editor of the Rothenberg Political Report, a political newsletter.

It has also been noted that Clinton is moving her politics rather firmly towards the centre ground in recent months which, whilst alienating some of her left wing allies, has made her seem much more electable in conservative upstate New York.

I'm not sure how I feel about this. There's one part of me that adores the fantasy of the Clinton's re-entering the White House, but, in truth, that's more about Bill rather than Hilary.

To win me over, she'd have to move more to the left. And she seems to have decided that's the last thing she's prepared to do.
